DesignCraft: what it does, how to install it, and what its own README warns about
DesignCraft is an open-source page and layout design editor written from scratch in pure Rust. This page collects the official status, install routes and stated limitations in one place, with dates and source links.
01 / WHAT IT IS
What DesignCraft does.
DesignCraft is a page-layout and publishing app — the Crafting Apps take on InDesign. The DesignCraft on this page is ArtCraft's open-source tool: not designcraft.com (a prototype manufacturer), design-craft.com (a fabrics company), or designcraft.co (a crafts marketplace), which share the name but not the software.
Official status: In development, per the official Crafting Apps directory (checked October 12, 2026). Category: Page layout.
02 / INSTALL
How to install it.
- Easiest route per the README: download from the official DesignCraft page, or pick a specific build from the GitHub releases page — Windows (MSI/portable, x64/ARM64/x86, code-signed), macOS (signed and notarized universal DMG), Linux (AppImage/Flatpak/deb/rpm/tarball, plus a riscv64 tarball), FreeBSD and web.
- From source: clone the repository and run `cargo run --release -p designcraft` (requires Rust 1.95 or newer; `-- --sample` opens the sample magazine).
The official directory says: “Recommended: ArtCraft Launcher installs every app below and keeps them all up to date. Each app also has its own installers on its page.” View the official ArtCraft Launcher repository ↗

03 / PLATFORMS & RELEASE
Where it runs, and what shipped last.
Official directory: macOS · Windows · Linux · Web. The README additionally lists FreeBSD builds in its release assets.
Latest GitHub release: v0.6.0, published 2026-10-11 · 3,190 stars (GitHub API snapshot, October 12, 2026 at 2026-10-12T12:11:36Z).
04 / KNOWN LIMITS
What the README itself warns about.
- Its own ROADMAP marks the stage as pre-alpha — earlier than the directory-wide "in development" label suggests (README, Architecture section).
- Known gaps are tracked in docs/gaps.md and docs/target-app-parity.md; the README does not claim a parity percentage (unlike its sibling apps).
- Japanese UI/document fonts require an optional craft-fonts build input; without it Japanese falls back to system fonts (README, Quick start).
