PhotoCraft: what it does, how to install it, and what its own README warns about

PhotoCraft is an open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Adobe Photoshop, rebuilt in pure Rust. This page collects the official status, install routes and stated limitations in one place, with dates and source links.

What PhotoCraft does.

PhotoCraft is a layered image editor: layers, masks, adjustment layers, layer styles, type, vectors and brushes, opening and saving real PSD files. It runs as a native desktop app and in the browser.

Official status: Early alpha, per the official Crafting Apps directory (checked October 10, 2026). Category: Image editing.

How to install it.

  • Easiest route per the README: grab an installer from the GitHub releases page — macOS, Windows, Linux (AppImage, .deb, .rpm, tarball, Flatpak), FreeBSD and web builds are attached to each release.
  • From source: clone the repository and run `cargo run --release -p photocraft -- image.psd` (Rust toolchain required).

The official directory says: “Recommended: ArtCraft Launcher installs every app below and keeps them all up to date. Each app also has its own installers on its page.” View the official ArtCraft Launcher repository ↗

Where it runs, and what shipped last.

Official directory: macOS · Windows · Linux · Web. The README additionally lists FreeBSD builds in its release assets.

Latest GitHub release: v0.7.0, published 2026-10-11 · 50,700 stars (GitHub API snapshot, October 12, 2026 at 2026-10-12T12:11:36Z).

What the README itself warns about.

  • The README is explicit: early alpha, "not yet a Photoshop replacement for daily professional work" — biggest gaps are AI/generative features, about twenty missing tools, typography depth, pro workflows and plug-in compatibility (README, parity assessment dated 2026-10-05).
  • On Wayland, drag-and-drop onto the window does not open files yet (upstream winit limitation, issue #386); the README suggests File › Open, paste, or running under XWayland.
  • PSD round trips render identically for 307 of 309 files in the psd-tools corpus, and a re-saved PSD is not byte-identical to its source (README, PSD section).
